Too Much Build Up on US Open
Sunday, June 28th, 2009

Don’t start thinking this is an anti golf column. I’ve been sitting watching the US Open just like the rest of the male population. I was stuck on Friday faking sick from work to watch the two rounds of golf back to back. So no this is not a negative theory article on golf so don’t worry.
My problem is all of the build up this year. Mickelson’s wife has cancer and now people decide to cheer for him. We have complete coverage on how he feels about the situation. What is this all about cant a man be left in peace. At least let it wait until the week of the open.
Now Tiger Woods is going to have all the press. Of course he deserves it. Last year’s performance by itself was the work of legends. It was so powerful it made him even more super human than ever and even propelled Rocco Mediate into the media spot light. Of course now Tigers revenge tour for back to back Opens is the latest story.
It’s not only golf and the US Open that has these problems with TV anymore. Has there been an event in the last couple of years that could live up to the hype. Almost every event or movie is ruined because of too much hype. How as a society can we ever let something happen anymore and enjoy it? Think of every Super Bowl and Finals in the last couple of years. Has there been one that could live up to the hype. It’s nearly impossible. Even with two great Super Bowls back to back they won’t go down in our minds like other great games have. This is because of the hype of everything. The Us Open is the latest of all of these episodes.
Just think of how magical the US Open will need to be to reach the hype. We will need Phil, Tiger and Rocco dueling it out in a playoff to try and reach the hype it has had. What is the likely hood of that happening? Probably a long shot.
We just had a good NBA playoffs but nobody will think so because the finals went down in 5 games. So now everyone is already looking at the draft and free agency. How crazy is that? We need to slow down with all the hype anymore.
We have too much TV and too much internet. We don’t enjoy our time anymore it’s too much waiting for the next thing. The US Open isn’t the problem the problem is us. We expect great every time and feel slighted when it’s something less.
Who’s at fault for this? The media or the public? We both need to look in the mirror everything is to over blown. There is no more attention to detail or just pure enjoyment. Now the US Open is not the start or the end of all the hype just another spoke on the wheel. Just sit back and enjoy your sports for what it is.
