There is a natural evolution in most peoples drinking patterns. Most people start off drinking beer or wine and very simple alcohol to learn. Then they start learning about all these drinks and go off experimenting. This is long island ice teas, surfer on acids, incredible hulks and all of the other mixed drinks that you poured down your throat during college. The drinks are great, can taste good and have a lot of liquor in them. They also are all intended to make young women act crazier than they intended.
When you start moving out of this phase, it is time to figure out what you like to drink. There are a couple of different schools of thought. First many men stick to beer and an occasional shot. The beer drinkers are easy, they usually find a beer they like and stick with it. Ordering a beer is always accepted as you get older. I prefer to stay away from beers with fruit but this can be acceptable in most instances.
The next group is the guy that enjoys wine. This can be over dinner and with your girl. Very few times is this going to fly when with your boys. I can understand the attraction, but unless you want to deal with the weird looks and comments I prefer to stay away from wine with friends. Learning wine can be great with women. Understanding how to order a bottle of wine over dinner can be a great turn on.

Mostly all other drinking is related to different liquor drinks. For a regular drink as a man your are relegated to vodka, gin, rum, whiskey and scotch. The margaritas need to go away unless you are in a beach setting, no questions about it. Tequila can be had on the rocks or as a shot. Personally I think vodka with any fruit needs to go away with men. Some people think vodka and cranberry is fine but I think it is a women’s drink personally. Vodka and tonic or with soda is fine. Gin and tonic takes some time to like but many people enjoy it. Gin and fruit juices fall in the same line with vodka for me.
When looking to drink rum it is often had with coke. You can drink captain and coke and Bacardi and coke. These will be the most acceptable for men while spiced rum with a juice during the day is fine. With whiskey you can drink it with coke or on the rocks. These are both fine and you will see this ordered at every bar in America. Scotch can be different for many. I think it should be had on the rocks or neat and no other way. You do see some people add water which is also acceptable. Do not order scotch with coke you’ll look like a jerk to the bartender many times. Scotch can be more expensive in many cases so mixing it with coke is considered wasteful.
Mature drinking will set you apart from the kids ordering crazy drinks. There are plenty of options to fill any taste bud and when talking with a women, you won’t look like you are on mom and dad’s credit card.
