The Evolution of the Apple iPod
Monday, March 30th, 2009
Ever since its release several years ago, the Apple iPod has been dominating the portable music industry. With millions of units sold, and a new model coming out yearly, the iPod has been Apple Computer’s most successful creation. But why is the iPod so wildly popular? One word; innovative.
When the iPod first came out it completely revolutionized the world of portable electronics. Until then, no gadget had been made that could hold a substantial amount of data, let alone thousands of songs. The original iPod was not the best invention every, but it paved the way for the future models, and for that it deserves a big thumbs-up.
Now, many years later, the iPod 1st gen has been replaced by the iPod classic, the iPod touch, and the iPhone. The technological progression has been exponential - every new edition of the iPod had, and future versions will continue to have, at least one major advancement. Whether it is storage capacity, video capability, touch-screen technology, or anything else, Apple always came through with a fantastic advancement.
Today we have the Apple iPhone - one of the most advanced pieces of technology available today. The iPhone comes in 8gb and 16gb sizes, and is an iPod, phone, and computer all in one. With the iPhone you can store all your favorite music (literally thousands of songs), make calls, access the internet, play games, and much, much more. The iPhone also has highly advanced touch-screen capabilities, so the device is very useful in that regard.

The iPhone has truly revolutionized the industry, especially with the thousands of applications or “apps” that the iPhone has. There is an estimated 25,000 apps available today, and more come out daily. Most apps are custom made by freelance developers, and most are free. The apps range from games to novelty things such as iFart, which basically just sends a fart sound to one of your friends. The app scene is very hot, and many people spend their time and money developing these applications just for fun. The iPhone retails for about $299, but it varies depending on the storage capacity you want. The only lame thing about the iPhone is that you HAVE to buy it with a 2 year plan from AT&T, which is not exactly a great company, nor is it cheap. But in the end it’s worth the price for the iPhone. I personally own one and I cannot live without it. Literally.
Then there’s the iPod touch. The touch is alright, but it’s nothing compared to the iPhone. The iPod touch is essentially an iPod classic with touch-screen ability. The touch also has technology similar to the Wii, which allows you to play highly interactive games. For instance, if you’re playing a driving game on the iPod touch, you can tilt the iPod, and your car will turn on-screen. This technology is also in the iPhone. The iPod touch retails for about $229.
It seems as though Apple releases a new technology every year, so I am eagerly awaiting the next release.
